ALICE?

Every November, Sydney has the Sculpture By The Sea exhibition. Around 100 artists get to select a spot along the Bondi to Tamarama coastal walkway to plonk their sculptures. This was the first year that I saw it. Some were hideous, some were great, some I didn't even notice! There were obvious crowd pleasers, like the melted icecream van on Tamarama beach, some huge ones by 'big' artists, and some smaller ones.

When I first saw this, I didn't like it at all. There are actually three together, a green and red one also (perhaps I should have posted a pic of all of them?). But after a while of pondering, which Pod often likes to do, I ended up really liking it. The positioning is perfect, and if all the other sculptures weren't there, this would have made more of an impact. It reminds me of something from Alice In Wonderland. Perhaps if you crawled inside and drew the curtains, you would find yourself in a different land when you opened them again......

I might post a few more photos of the pieces that caught the eyes of Pod, but then I might not.......

They (whoever "they" are) say that art is all about context, and this definitely seems like an exercise in playing with context.

Those rocks are amazing!

I'm not sure if I climbed inside, I'd want to find myself in a different land when I came out.

Both land and photo look lovely to me!

Oh my God! What an absolutely fabulous photograph, and what a GREAT idea for an art exhibition! You can read a ton into this picture, such a contrast between nature and the manufactured. Brilliant!

Pod - I love it!

Cool, it's very oriental looking. I would love to have such an event in North Devon, we only get the annual sandcastle competition!

I have to admit it is interesting. Not what I would think of as being a sculpture but I can see it growing on you.

As a reply to a question you asked on my blog.. yes I do think you are a little weird.. but weird is a wonderful way to be. I take pride in my weirdness.

Hi Pod,
It's been a while since I last visited, I love all your new photos. You did a fantastic job with this one because quite frankly, just like you I thought these 3 houses were absolutely terrible. And now I look at your shot and I think 'definitely the best that could be done!'

It is a great shot. Good that you cropped it, even better about the weather being overcast. Something about the contrasts between the roughness of the rock, the smooth artificiality of the hut, the calmness of the water caught in the reflecting rock pools and the ocean in motion background....not to mention the black and white hut, desolate background, and overcast surroundings: all make this a very good shot. Additional colour would have been a mistake.
