There's something rather frightening about this photo.
Ella however is a great kid. She seems to believe that every plane in the sky is full folk on their way to the shops to buy apples. Specifically apples, nothing else. I am pretty sure that she just spotted an airplane here, and distractedly thought for a moment 'there they go again!'. She has convinced me to think the same now.

my mum taught a child who used to watch her rather like that - she found out the child was told by their parent that mum would grow a tree out of her ears because she ate apples whole, core and pips and all

Ahh she reminds me of one of my goddaughters who thought everything edible was either POCK or BEEK.
I believe she was allergic to all things BEEK. We never did figure out what the hell she meant. ... well she looked ALOT like your little girl here when she was a toddler.

I have to disagree about your take on the photo - I don't get frightening at all. It seems so full of life and movement. But Ella does look like a great kid (see I don't totally disagree.)
